Orienteering Meet

It was a hot, humid day for orienteering, but we had 35 starts, with 45 total participants, which is about average for meets farther from Pittsburgh. There were an excessive number of biting insects, which added to the discomfort from the heat and humidity. Several wise participants sported mosquito net head covers to help ward off the hordes of bugs.

Sherry Shank planned five cross-country courses from beginner to advanced levels for participants to try. Because of all the rain we have had this month, vegetation levels were extremely high, which made navigating through the forest quite challenging. There was a higher-than-normal number of people who did not complete their courses, which may be attributable to the difficulty of the courses, the insane levels of vegetation and biting insects, and the heat and humidity. Finish times were slower than may have been predicted. Luca Rzewski was the first finisher on the Advanced long in a time of 1:46:50, and Joe Logan was the first finisher on the Advanced short in a time of 104:26.

Alexis Rzewski traveled outside of the park boundaries quite a ways in search of control 6 on the Red Course, but was able to recalibrate and locate the control after his adventure. Many participants complained about the bugs, and there was a lot of scratching going on at the pavilion after the event. Our next meet is at Pine Ridge Park on September 13, where Ryan Knecht has designed some fun Sprint courses for you to try. There will be two longer (for advanced and intermediate orienteers) and two shorter (for beginner and novice orienteers) courses.
