Babcock Bog & Boulder Challenge
Orienteering Meet
25 April 2026

It was another rainy day for the 3BC with temperatures in the 50s. The rain and fog are getting to be a tradition, an unwelcome one. We had 16 teams on the 3-hour and 27 teams on the 6-hour (a total of 73 participants); 9 teams that were preregistered either canceled right before the event or did not show up. The overall winner on the 3-hour was The Rzewskinator with 982 points; he found 16 controls. The overall winner on the 6-hour was Ian Whitehead with 1776 points; he found 29 controls and won even being 3 minutes late. There were 40 controls with a total of 2428 points.

Jim Wolfe designed the courses. He took advantage of the 600 acres that were added to the map since last year by placing multiple controls in these areas. Most comments about the event were very positive. There was one problem with control 57 which was not hung properly and had fallen to the ground. It was rehung by a couple competitors. Negative comments were generally weather related (it rained almost continuously from 9 am to 5 pm which produced fog in the strip mine area).

As usual there were 8 First Found tags on the courses. The teams that found them were: 43 - Ekaterina Izotova, 48 - Fen-tastically Bolder, 51 - was not awarded, 58 - Team Boy-O, 64 - Jonathan Boyer, 67 - Lost in Pace, 70 - The North Hill, and 82 - Jerkface. There was no award for 51 because it was returned by someone who had already found another First Found tag and the limit is one per person. By analyzing the split times, it looks like Team G should have been the next team to reach 51. So, I figure Team G should be receiving the $20 award.

There is a table of visitations available that you can view (Visit Counts). It shows how many teams actually found each control. It should be no surprise that control 41 was the most visited as it was closest to the start. Every control was visited by at least 5 teams with controls 72 and 50 being the least visited. 72 was one of the most distant controls; so there should be fewer visits; I have no explanation for 50. One of the good things from the designer's point of view is that every control except 50 was visited by at least one 3-hour team.

Thanks to Ryan Knecht and Kim Stewart for vetting and putting out the controls. Thanks to Ekaterina Izotova and Dave Gailey for directing parking. Thanks to Sherry Shank, Patti Leibfreid, Kim Stewart and Laurie Opila for handling registration/check-in. Thanks to Jim Wolfe for helping with start/finish. And thanks to Kim Stewart, Eric Steinbring, Lee Bash and Jim Wolfe for doing control pickup.

You can view the splits at Splits

You can view the combined results (all 3-hour grouped and all 6-hour grouped) at Combined Results. The table also shows how many controls each team visited.
