Orienteering Meet

It was a very nice day for orienteering. North Park was crowded with many other people doing other things; but we did not have any problem running the event. We had 50 starts from 82 people, including a pair of scouts who took first place in both the beginner and novice courses.

Dave Battista designed six courses for the event, our five regular cross-country courses plus a bike course. We had only three starts on the bike course. Most of the participants enjoyed their courses; however, there were a few controls that were in areas that were greener than expected and one particular control that was on the Intermediate, Advanced Short and Advanced Long courses that caused significant problems - see below.

Control 53 (first control on the Intermediate and Advanced Short course and control #6 on the Advanced Long course) caused problems for virtually everyone on those courses. Due to some oversights and miscommunication, the flag for control 53 was not as described in the control descriptions and was not in the center of the control circle. Competitors were looking for it near a trail at the bottom of a reentrant; whereas it was pretty much at the top of the reentrant in a green area. About half of the people going to control 53 found it and half did not; everyone spent considerable time looking for it. In the results, everyone who went to control 53 and did not find it were given credit for it. However, don't expect the splits to be correct; a fake time was inserted for the visitations.
