Raccoon Creek State Park
Raccoongaine VII (20 March 2016)

It was another cold day at Raccoon Creek as the high for the day maybe in the mid 30's. there was a very light snow flurry in the air, not too windy; so, most people regarded it as a good weather day. This year again there was very good cooperation for the participants with respect to parking. Thanks to all the competitors for making an effort at carpooling.

The registration limit was again reached early this year. We had 27 3-hour teams and 62 6-hour teams registered; however, one 3-hour team did not show up and four 6-hour teams did not show up. The format was the same as in previous Raccoongaines: 50 controls with values of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 (10 controls of each value for a total of 1500 possible points). The penalty for lateness was 10 points per minute.  Four mystery controls were not shown on the map (in this case controls 113, 115, 117, and 119) and four other controls (the mother controls, in this case 112, 136, 116, and 118, respectively) had maps to show where the mystery controls were. After arriving at a mother control, competitors could choose to go to the mystery control or not; all mystery controls were 20-point controls.

We had two controls that were problematical.  The map at control 140 was incorrect so the control flag was placed on the correct feature; however that was about 60 m from the center of the circle on the map.  This problem was noted during control placement and was put in the course notes and map corrections and was announced.  The other problem was not discovered until after the race.  Control 122 was placed on the wrong reentrant about 150 m from where the map showed it.  Amazingly, even with this much displacement, 17 teams found 122.  [If your team searched for 122 in vain, let us know and we will adjust your score - sorry, nothing we can do about the lost time.]

Comments about the races:

This year, for the first time, a woman was the overall winner on the 3-hour course:  Comin' Over the Mountain with 370 points.  Notably, second overall was Rob Wilkison, oldest person on the 3-hour course  with 310 points.  One team, Red Czars, had a problem with their SI card - they forgot to clear and check it.  Their score was determined a couple days later when the download data was reinterpreted; originally, their score was almost -13000.

As he did in 2013, Brian Mayer tore up the 6-hour course, reaching 45 controls (counting #122) and attaining the highest score we have ever had at a Raccoongaine, 1420 points.  Hail to the Chimp, last year's winner, was second with 37 controls and 1210 points.  There was a three-way tie for third at 1080 points, including Olga Huber (the most successful woman on the 6-hour course) and UNO no DUO (one of our veteran competitors).  Brian Mayer was awarded 30 bonus points for reporting #122 as displaced - others can get the same bonus by reporting they searched for and didn't find the control.  This year's group on the 6-hour course seemed to be better than last year; there were 7 teams that reached 30 or more controls; last year, there was one.

No surprise, the most visited control was 103, with 130 and 136 not too far behind.  Least visited was 137, not a surprise either due to its remoteness.  Controls 105, 113, and 142 were tied for second least visited.  For the mystery controls, it was a surprise that three teams that went to Mother control 118 did not go to mystery control 119; these  controls were only a little over 100 m apart.  Five teams went to Mystery control 117 without going to Mother control 116 first; two of these teams must have thought they were at 116 because they never went to 116.

One little bit of analysis.  In putting out the controls, I found that going between control 127 and 146 to be extremely taxing, going down and up 60-70 m over a distance of only 400 m.  I was curious as to how many teams took this same leg and how long it took them.  Thirteen teams took the leg in one direction or the other; their times ranged from about 5 minutes to 36 minutes; I was amazed that UNO no DUO did it in about 8 minutes.

A lot of people helped to make Raccoongaine VII possible. Thanks to Alexis Rzewski for designing the courses and making the awards. Thanks to Dave Battista for vetting the course. Thanks to Joe Logan, John Huffman and Ryan Knecht for controlling parking. Thanks to Sherry Shank and Laurie Opila for dealing with waivers and packets. Thanks to Laurie Opila and Joe Logan for preparing food. Thanks to Joe Logan for putting out the water stops. And thanks to Jen Livingston and Laurie Opila for helping pick up control flags.
