Orienteering Meet

After what seemed like a week of rain, the day of the meet turned out to be a good one for orienteering.  The woods were still wet and the temperature was in the low 50's; but it was a good day to be out looking for controls.  We had very good participation with 56 people showing up and 31 starts.  We had several ROTC students from West Virginia, as well as several people that stopped at the orienteering table at X-Fest the day before.

Jim Wolfe  was meet director.  He designed a single 40-control score course with controls set at all skill levels.  The idea was that with a mass start at noon novices would go for the easy controls and maybe push themselves to try a more difficult one or two; intermediate orienteers could go for a mixture of easy and more difficult ones; and advanced orienteers would try to collect all or most of the high point controls.  Participants were allowed to classify themselves as "Beginners", "Intermediate" or "Expert" and are listed in separate results lists below.  There were ten 10-point controls, ten 20-point controls, ten 30-point controls, and ten 40-point controls for a maximum possible 1000 points.  Ninety minutes were allowed for the course.   It was not expected that anyone would clear the course and not one did, although Alexis Rzewski came close having visited 36 controls*.  Paul Humphreys was the only person to visit all of the 40-point controls.  A fair number of participants were a little overtime and consequently penalized.  This was to be expected because from wherever they were at their last control it was uphill to the finish.  It was anticipated that many of expert orienteers would take a similar route; you can view two variations of this route for Alexis Rzewski and Ryan Knecht.

In determining the results, there were at least half a dozen punches on various punch cards that were not counted.  This was because the punch was wrong for the box it was in and there was no explanation from the participants as to why that occurred.
